BRIDGES

When one or several teeth are missing with several teeth surrounding the spaces on either end, a possible treatment option can be a bridge. A dental bridge requires at least two supporting teeth, and can be made out of a variety of materials. Advantages of a dental bridge are that they can fill a space where a tooth is missing in an esthetic way, they can address other adjacent teeth which may require dental treatment, and they are fixed in the mouth and not removable. Some disadvantages are that they can be difficult to keep clean, which can sometimes lead to gum loss in the surrounding area.

Cleanings

While good dental home care is important, there are still many areas of the mouth that are not accessible to you, even with diligent tooth-brushing and flossing. Dental cleanings should be received at least twice a year, and are performed by our friendly, caring hygienist. Some patients require deep cleanings and more frequent recall visits to keep their teeth sturdy and their gums healthy. You can expect to leave the office feeling fresh, with tips and reminders to help you achieve and maintain oral health.

Comprehensive Care

The mouth is the entrance to the body, and oral health directly correlates to whole body health. When comprehensive care is performed, treatment extends beyond the gums and teeth. Considerations are taken as to the etiology of dental disease and how it relates to other systemic conditions, with an emphasis on prevention. The function of the jaw and how it can relate to headaches and neck pain is evaluated and treated. Overall, the patient receives a well-rounded, all inclusive examination, as well as thorough conversation on lifestyle changes that can improve health overall.

Here are some articles that describe the relationship between oral health and whole-body health:

Gum disease and diabetes:
Grossi, S. G., & Genco, R. J. (1998). Periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus: a two‐way relationship. Annals of periodontology, 3(1), 51-61.

Gum disease and pregnancy:
Gil, L., Mínguez, I., Caffesse, R., & Llambés, F. (2019). Periodontal Disease in Pregnancy: The Influence of General Factors and Inflammatory Mediators. Oral health & preventive dentistry, 17(1).

Dental decay and obesity:
Alswat, K., Mohamed, W. S., Wahab, M. A., & Aboelil, A. A. (2016). The association between body mass index and dental caries: cross-sectional study. Journal of clinical medicine research, 8(2), 147.

Cosmetic Bonding

The edge of a tooth can fracture from certain foods or habits, but may not warrant full coverage. Some teeth don’t grow or develop the way they should. Intrinsic staining may not look good. For these reasons, cosmetic bonding can be indicated. Tooth-colored material is used to build up the cracked edge, to recontour, or to cover up stains. These restorations do require good homecare and hygiene follow up, but can make a big difference in the appearance of a tooth and a patient’s entire smile.

Crowns

When a tooth has an extensive amount of decay or wear, or is at risk of fracture, a full or partial coverage crown (“cap”) may be needed. A crown covers most of the tooth with either gold, porcelain, or other metals and ceramics to reinforce it and protect it from further damage. While crowns add a level of protection to the existing tooth, the tooth still needs to be handled with care. In some instances, mouth guards are also recommended as another way to protect the teeth and crowns.

Dentures

For some patients, the time comes when the remaining teeth are not restorable or able to be saved. For these patients, who wish to smile, speak, and eat, dentures can be a viable option. The unhealthy teeth are removed, and prosthetic teeth can replace them. While dentures do not function or feel like teeth, with time, the body adjusts well and a smile is restored. In some instances, dental implants can be used to support or retain dentures as well.

Emergencies

Tooth pain is nothing to smile about, and we do everything we can to address dental emergencies in a timely manner. Even when the office is closed, there is always a dentist on call to answer any questions or to address any concerns. In some emergency situations, one of our dentists may decide to open the office after hours to perform an examination and provide care for the patient in need.

Extractions

If a tooth has extensive decay to the point where it can no longer be preserved or if a patient has significant periodontal disease, it can be time for a tooth to be removed. When a dental extraction is performed by our skilled dentists, it is always with the greatest consideration of the patient’s health and comfort. If an implant is anticipated, or to preserve the extraction site, a bone graft may be indicated.

Implants

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason, and can be placed by our very own highly trained dentists.

The ideal candidate for a dental implant is in good general and oral health. Adequate bone in your jaw is needed to support the implant, and the best candidates have healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease.

  • Replacing a Single Tooth - If you are missing a single tooth, one implant and a crown can replace it.
  • Replacing Several Teeth - If you are missing several teeth, implant-supported bridges can replace them.
  • Replacing All of Your Teeth - If you are missing all of your teeth, an implant-supported full bridge or full denture can replace them.
  • Sinus Augmentation - A key to implant success is the quantity and quality of the bone where the implant is to be placed. The upper back jaw has traditionally been one of the most difficult areas to successfully place dental implants due to insufficient bone quantity and quality and the close proximity to the sinus. Sinus augmentation can help correct this problem by raising the sinus floor and developing bone for the placement of dental implants.
  • Ridge Modification - Deformities in the upper or lower jaw can leave you with inadequate bone in which to place dental implants. To correct the problem, the gum is lifted away from the ridge to expose the bony defect. The defect is then filled with bone or bone substitute to build up the ridge. Ridge modification has been shown to greatly improve appearance and increase your chances for successful implants that can last for years to come.

Your own teeth require conscientious at-home oral care and regular dental visits. Dental implants are like your own teeth and will require the same care. In order to keep your implant clean and plaque-free, brushing and flossing still apply!

Periodic follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor your implant, teeth and gums to make sure they are healthy.

Mouth/Sports Guards

Some people have very strong bites or habitual grinding, and some people participate in activities which can create the potential for tooth damage. In order to protect the teeth from wear and damage, a mouth guard can be indicated. Typically, these are worn at night while sleeping or during sport activities. They’re made out of a material that is comfortable in the mouth, and strong enough to protect the teeth.

Oral Cancer Screening

At every exam, an oral cancer screening is performed to inspect the head and neck for any signs of cancerous or precancerous lesions. This screening is necessary for early detection and early intervention, which greatly increases the likelihood of a cure. The head and neck, as well as the areas around the tongue and throat, are examined for changes in color or shape. Radiographs are reviewed for any abnormalities in the bone. Without early intervention, oral cancers have about a 57% five-year survival rate, so early intervention is key.

Root Canals

Dull achy pain, pain too hot and or cold, waking up from tooth pain… all these things can mean that the nerve in your tooth is in the middle of dying. When a tooth’s nerve is causing pain or is already dead, a root canal may be necessary. This treatment entails removing the unhealthy nerve from the tooth, and replacing it with an inert thermoplastic material. In most cases, a tooth that needs root canal therapy will also need full coverage with a crown to strengthen the tooth and prevent future fracture.

Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening can be performed in a variety of ways, and is a way to lighten the color of the teeth. The source of the stain or discoloration, the age of the teeth, and previous dental work are all factors that can affect the outcome of whitening. For most whitening cases, we can provide chairside whitening and our patients walk out with noticeably whiter teeth! Our office provides the patient with a custom bleaching tray and a bleaching compound for home bleaching in order to boost their whitening in the future as well. Progress can be determined with follow up visits at the office. This treatment is a wonderful way to brighten up a smile!
